Open Letter to Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos and Department of Education

October 21, 2019
The Honorable Betsy DeVos
Secretary
U.S. Department of Education
400 Maryland Avenue SW
Washington, D.C. 20202

Dear Secretary DeVos,

We at C-Bond Systems are dedicated to increasing safety and security in schools and other facilities across our country by using our patented nanotechnology solutions that enhance the strength and performance of glass.  With the start of America’s Safe Schools Week today, we applaud the continued focus on school safety and security and the adoption of products and services that help fulfill that critical need. As you are a member of the Federal Commission on School Safety established by President Donald Trump, we heartily support your commitment to that common goal.

We would like to offer our ballistic-resistant system, C-Bond BRS, to the Department of Education and schools across the country to help improve the safety and security and students, teachers and other school personnel. C-Bond BRS is a patented, third-party validated ballistic-resistant film system. It is independently validated to provide NIJ Level I, Level IIA, Level II, and UL 752 ballistic-resistant protection by an independent third-party laboratory. C-Bond BRS consists of the patented C-Bond glass strengthening technology, which increases glass strength and flexibility by chemically bonding to the defects randomly distributed on the glass surface to help prevent breakage, and a private-label security film.  C-Bond BRS is already in use in more than 70 schools and other facilities across the U.S.

It is important to point out that many school shootings involve penetration of glass and windows within the building. By fortifying the glass in the windows and doors of schools, our solution can significantly increase the safety and security and students and staff. As an example, the shooter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland did not enter any classroom; rather he shot through the windows of the classroom doors to reach his victims.

With the start of the 35th annual America’s Safe Schools Week, we urge you to support a policy that would require schools to use third-party validated ballistic-resistant protection on glass throughout school facilities. This policy would help save lives.

Sincerely,

Scott R. Silverman, Chairman and CEO
